Skincare tips for the winter weather

As the days grow shorter and the trees have turned fiery shades of red, yellow, and orange, the dry, cool air that comes with the season can leave skin looking dull, irritated, and anything but youthful. With winter coming upon us, it’s the time to change up your beauty routine and skincare, making sure you don’t fall victim to preventable skin problems.

Here are three easy product swaps to help your skin get through the autumn.

Switch to a Gentler Exfoliator

Because cooler temperatures constrict blood vessels, exfoliation is especially important during the cooler months. Exfoliants that have a rough texture, with ingredients like salt, sugar, and salicylic acid, are great to use in the summer when the skin is hydrated and more resilient. But in the fall, they can irritate skin that’s dry.

For the season, switch to a product that’s gets its sloughing power from round jojoba beads or micro-beads, or oatmeal—it’s also good to look for a formula that contains soothing ingredients like aloe, natural oils. You can even make your own scrub by combining 1 tablespoon oatmeal with 1 teaspoon honey and 2 tablespoons milk or yogurt. Gently massage the mixture into your skin and rinse. You’ll be left soothed, smooth skin.

Swap Your Toner for a Water-Based Toner

Those who have oily skin might prefer alcohol-based toners during summer, to help minimize grease and oil from suntan lotion and sweat. But in colder weather, alcohol can strip even the oiliest complexions.

A water-based toner will balance the skin’s pH and remove makeup just as well without drying the skin. Scan the label for calming ingredients such as chamomile and rose water for extra soothing benefits.

Use Natural Oils as a Moisturiser

Warmer air usually holds a lot of water vapour, which can help keep your skin hydrated in the summer. Not so when the leaves turn, as cool, dry winds start to seriously deplete the body’s natural moisture reserves. Naturally derived oils (like argon, jojoba, or coconut) absorb quickly absorb and instantly hydrate. Before you apply your usual moisturiser, rub a few drops of your favourite non-greasy oil between your hands and massage it into your skin.

For the best skincare results, make sure to buy 100% pure oils in an opaque glass bottle, which will help last the product last longer. Bonus skincare use: rub the oil into nail beds to keep cuticles looking smooth and healthy.
